  • Princeton Tec Apex
This was my primary light until I upgraded to the Petzl Vario. For the money you not only get ample light output but a solid build and a five year warranty! My favourite thing about this lamp is that it runs on AA batteries and you could either carry spares in your trace wallet or get a set of rechargeable batteries and a charger for less than a tenner if you fish regularly. Be sure to go for the latest model which kicks out a whopping 275 Lumens though.

  • Varivas
In my opinion, the number one hook company in the UK. From their size 6 semi circles through to their 8/0 Big Mouth Extras, their hooks have proved both match winners and the number one hook for specimen hunters. Often half the price of very similar hook patterns! The rest of their range, in particular their rig/shock monofilaments and their Fluorocarbons are also excellent.

  • Breakaway IMP Bait Clips
I really like these, they're the only clip I use now, ive had no issues with them at all, although the biggest bait I use is a small whole squid. However they are a real pain to put together!

  • Namix Leads
Perfect for tucking a big bait behind. The design of the lead ensures that the flat back not only guards the bait in flight, but also allows the sinker to dig in to the sea bed helping it to hold bottom.

  • Guided Fishing Norway
Guided Fishing Norway is run by John Strange and you won’t go wrong using him for your shore fishing holiday. John will always be ready on the end of the phone or email to give advice and answer your questions about what fishing equipment and clothing etc. to bring along on your trip. It’s all in the planning. John stays out in Norway for three months of the year and if he is not looking after you, he will be fishing new marks to take clients to. Your adventure begins when you’re picked up from Boda airport in the big 4x4 tuck and taken to the accommodation which is a traditional Norwegian style house overlooking Saltstrouman. The rooms are clean and comfortable with fresh linen, the kitchen diner and lounge are spacious and comfortable and the log burner is very welcoming on them cold days! Indecently, as a bonus, there are two fantastic fishing marks within walking distance from the accommodation that have seen cod to 40lb and Halibut to 50lb! Each day you wake up to a fully cooked breakfast to set you up for the day; then into the truck to head off to your chosen fishing marks. The good thing about the big 4x4 is that not only does it have studded tyres, but also snow chains, winter pack and additional light bars etc., this baby can get you to those “off the beaten track” marks that most hire cars can’t get to in the snowy season. At the end of the day you’re picked up and bought back to the house where there will be a hot meal waiting for you. After dinner, you can sit round the log burner, drink cold beer and talk about the big one that you lost or head back out for another few hours on the local marks. Remember the next morning the bacon will be sizzling once again. John is always on hand to help out to answer questions and give advice if required. Plenty of fresh bait is provided in with the price for everyone and there is a chest freezer and vacuum bag sealer for your fillets. Rod and reel rental is available (new Century T900s and T1000s and Shimano 10000s) and all terminal tackle it available to purchase at cheap rates just in case you forgot to pack something. As far as I’m concerned, it’s value for money. A good variety of fishing marks for a wide variety of fish, Dabs, Plaice, Cod, Haddock, Coalfish, Pollock, Halibut, Redfish, Ling and Lumb and more are all on the agenda. The deep-water (200mdeep) fishing is awesome and Guided Fishing Norway already has a shore record under its belt! Good food, Good transport, Good accommodation, Good bait, Good tackle and Good guiding . Follow them on Facebook. We have booked up again this year and next!

  • Conoflex Nemesis Plus
I used one of these for a couple of years and it was a lovely rod. Very powerful but quite unforgiving if you get your timing wrong on the cast. Mine met its end by being left propped against a wall and the sun coming through the window put a permanent bend in the tip!

  • Century Tip Tornado LD Super Match
Could start by saying how deceptively powerful the rod is, but its not deceptive with a great name like century behind it you know the rod is going to be up to the challenge.I fish Chesil with the rod in strong tides and high winds and it does a fantastic job of standing up to the conditions. 5oz Whole squid full power pendulum is no trouble for this rod, absolutley love it. The bite detection is next level as well, a pout 3 inches long caught at 150 yards looks more like bass bite than a minnow, cant fault great work century

  • Breakaway Fastlink Clips
Absolutely brilliant clips. They are perfect for tieing to the end of your shockleader but are equally at home as a lead link on the end of a trace. They don't rust away either like some copies which means they can be used time and time again.

  • Snowbee Rockhopper Wading Boots
These seemed pretty good to start with, but half way through their first outing on the rocks one of the zips Undid itself causing the boot to slide around. That said, they seem to work better in conjunction with a stocking foot wader rather than as an out and out rock boot.

  • Greased Weasel Shock Leader
I like using Greased Weasel 70 because it's easy to tie and holds most things. for an example I was fishing Ladrum bay off of a small small rowing boat sized boat with my father-in-law and we got caught in the race but luckily my rod and line knots held strong and kept us from floating away as if we were anchored to the bottom, long enough for my father-in-law to pull in his 3lb pollack. I think this a good test to the strength and quality for Greased Weasel, so for this I give it the big thumbs up.

  • Shakespeare Salt Tripod
Although well built I found few probs I don't like about this rest Locking legs to long can't get tripod low enough when needed and the rods sit to far apart for my personal liking and go off at angles not straight up I took leg lock kits off And bought need head and cups to make rods sit how I'd like them I do like how compact it goes down

  • Daiwa Saltist Advanced Interline Boat Rods
My first review . I have started using interine rods this year and liked the look of the adv interline rod so went and bought one after using it all season all i can say is wow what a piece of kit i opted for the 20lb version as wanted more action with this rod you get a total diffrent feeling when you hook a fish it is supple at the tip but has so much power through the mid to butt section i landed fish over 24lb with ease i would highly recomend this rod only one downside is it can be tricky getting the braid or line through the rod blank using the tool supplied but once its threaded this rod preforms amazingly and there is no guides to break or get caught up on

  • Greased Weasel Shock Leader
Bit of a classic this one. The 60lb makes a nice snood line on pulley rigs here in the Bristol Channel. The fact that it's still in production after many year's speaks volumes. Smooth, supple and knots a treat!

  • Sundridge Crossflow Pro Extreme - 2 Piece Floatation Suit
In the middle of winter when you question your sanity for even being out, this is a God send. Although it's a floatation suit it's still pretty easy to move about in as it's breathable you don't sweat your socks off either. Not the cheapest but by no means the most expensive suit out there, but worth every penny in my eyes.

  • Princeton Tec Apex
I used one of these for a long time... and they are very good, reliable, light weight and cheap to buy. The problem is that they don't light up as bright on rechargeables as they do on standard batteries, and the batteries end up getting expensive. I found the best batteries to run them on were Lithium batteries, which seemed to make the light brighter and they lasted for ages. More expensive than alkaline batteries but ended up buying less of them. If you only occasionally do night fishing, or need a light for one of your kids to come with you now and again, these are perfect. If you need to use one frequently, spend extra and get a Petzl Ultra.

I love this stuff and have used it almost exclusively for over ten years! Smooth, strong and supple with an excellent diameter to breaking strain ratio. Most of my fishing takes place in the dark so the hi viz yellow colour makes it easy to Spot too. A big winner in my book.

  • Shimano Catana 13ft Surf
Having used and owned softer tipped rods I opted for this as an entry level rough ground rod. Paid £70 new for it which I was delighted with. At the shop I had considered both the catana and a sonik black. Similar price but the difference was demonstrated in store and the strength of the catana win hands down. Fished the east coast of Scotland up at usan and was glad I had the rough ground rod. So, putting the rod to its test, out the bag very understated but a nice finish all the same in black, very few markings. Nice loling rod. I assembled it with my fixed spool and got to work. First cast sent the 6oz plus bait out a decent 100 plus yards without any real effort. However the retrieving was wher it came into its own. Where my other rods would gave suffered the catana was first class. Pulled my weight and hooks through the kelp fairly easily. Always felt confident I would retrieve my shock leader and weight in tact. Had one scrap with a big fish and it performed very well, easy to see bites and pulls in fish without any effort. First trip left me keen to get the rod out again. Nice weight, nice reel seat. All good. Only downside is it's a 2 piece, my car is a bit wee for it. Highly recommended

  • Shimano PowerPro Braid
I found this braid very early on when I switched over to braid from mono so I can't really compare it to the others, however that in itself speaks for it, I haven't had to try many others because its so good. Perfectly round profil which flies off the multis when casting from the shore and also very nice for the fixed spool reels too, I use it in 53lb 66lb & 88lb and it covers all the mixed to rough ground venues I fish, dropping down to the 53lb when extra distance is required I'd like to go lighter for added distance but for the grounds I fish it might not be up to it abrasion wise
